Sv,
See if you can get a better scan of the first 24c stamp. I don't think it's a 70a from what I see. |

Looks like some sort of grayish lilac to me.... As silly as it sounds I never got into catalog numbers much myself. But it's not one of the 1862 shades from where I sit (brown or red lilac).
I can see what I have if you want but pretty much all of mine are vf/xfs |

Hard to tell from that picture, colors fade on those making ID tough. I gave up trying to figure out colors on 150 year old Stamps, I see mine is in as rough of shape as yours, I was hoping to get a color off mine to compare, but it looks as if it might not help much. |

so how do you ID one of these? It could be a 78 or 70? I would be pissed because I already have a 78a. |

Sv,
Experience. I have hundreds of off cover 70/78/99s and doubt that I could exactly match the color on more than a couple. My Steel Blues are noticeably varying in shade, and that's assuming we only take copies that have been certified by the PF as true steel blues into consideration. Richard Champagne has one that's faulty in his reference collection that has an incredible shade of Steel Blue that is intense like I have never seen.
You really need to see these in hand, next stamp show you go to, suggest you see some of the bigger dealers and get an idea of what's out there. And it's also important that if you want to buy ONE example that you need to be familiar with the shades in order to obtain a copy that's truly representative of the shade. I have, amongst my certified Steel Blues, stamps that go anywhere from "Yeah I guess you could call it a steel blue" to absolutely stunning stamps with rich color.

Oh yeah, from this laptop the first 24c stamp could pass for a Brownish Lilac, but it looks to have weak color from here. I'm STILL on the road.. stuck in Kentucky (dealership has my car held hostage! :( ) |

I spoke to the seller about the 70a, he will back it up and suggests I get a cert. IF it isn't then he will pay for the cert. Today being Thursday, I should get all of these by Saturday. So I will know more then. If the seller is that confident and then suggests getting a cert from Weiss, I feel better about it, though all 4 of those will get a cert. they are all worth over 100+. |

Daryl,
Unless the seller is paying for certs on those, IMO, you would be wasting your money from what I see.
The 30c is creased and with G-VG centering is probably a $30ish stamp, the first 24c is Fine or so, that's a $100-125 stamp but then it's got damaged perfs, and the 12c stamp has something funky going on at the SW corner of the lower right rosette. Shame as it's pretty well centered for those.
I cant speak for the bottom stamp, but I dont see the top 3 being worth over $100 each. I've bought plating copies of the 24c stamp recently that looked better than the first one for under $100 each.
I suggest you dip em in fluid once you get them and we go from there before you tie up your money, etc with getting certs. |

the 12c has a 1mm sealed tear in LowerRHC
the 30c and 24c are advertised as no tears or thins.. if the 30c is creased, it is going back, as I must have missed it and it is not described in the listing.
he has a return policy that states I can return anything I don't want.. |

Bill, the crease on the 30¢ Franklin. are you referring to the upper right corner ? I don't know what you would or did pay for the 70A but there are nicer ones to be had. My thinking is there will always be 1 available so I wait until the Primo one lands at my fingertips. Here is 1 on ebay right now for $95.00 which I think is still a bit too much, but it is in decent shape. http://cgi.ebay.com/70a-Used-F-VF-N...em4a977894e5 Here is a look at the different colors. |
