I'm not an active collector of precancels but I do have a number of them from Wisconsin.
This precancel recently sold for $46.76 on ebay.

I don't have a PSS catalog but I wasn't aware of any expensive precancels from Sheboygan. Did I miss something or was this just a case of 4 bidders getting carried away? Is it the stamp?

I was planning to sell my precancels in lots but now I'm not sure. I may have to do more research.

Any information would help.

Thanks!
Dan

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

Why such a premium for this issue? Is it a particularly rare item? I have the same precancel on a 1 cent variety (597-43) and I'm guessing it's only worth a few cents (or am I wrong?)

The 598-43 is $.15. Probably not a high demand for 1st class (2cent rate) resulting in low production numbers.

Thanks for the info. While my stamp may not have value, at least now I know what to look out for!

The ebay buyer got it for a good price. That is a scarce bureau precancel. There are many scarce WI precancels, but this is the only valuable one from Sheboygan.

Danstamp54, even though this isjust a .10 cent precancel, sometimes the precancel & the stamp together changes everything.
I show in my PSS Buerau '97 & Noble Buerau '80 show a .02 cent coil unused valued at $125.00. PSS indicates stamp as 599-43. It is possible that the stamp is actually 599A with overprint. Need a better look.

Warrehouse, I'm sorry I can't give you a better look. I, um, "borrowed" the picture from the listing.

I've never given much consideration to the underlying stamps in my precancel collection. I'm going to have to give my collection a closer look. Just what I need another topic of stamp collecting to get addicted to!

Thanks to everyone for the information!

Dan

The only bureau precancels issued on the 599A (Type II) were Boston, Mass and Detroit, Mich. both in style 61.
