Found this among some perfins. The perfin is clearly "NSBK" so I assume it's from a bank. However, my question really has to do with the cancel. Is this a precancel or simply a box cancel?

It looks as if it was supposed to read "Boston, Mass." but some debris must have gotten in the way during the printing process because of how obsured the city name is.

The National Shawmut Bank - with a non-precancel Boston MASS [box or roller].

Thanks for the info. I thought it might be a box cancel rather than a precancel, but wasn't sure.

Also, since I have several "NSBK" perfins, you've helped me identify them as National Shawmut Bank. Thanks again. It was well worth posting!

With respect I believe that this is a broken Boston Type 204 the space between the lines & the city on top with the state below seems to match a 204. Measure the line it should be 1mm wide & the distance between the 2 lines should be 12.5mm. The letters should stand 3.5-4mm tall.

I feel a box roller would not have fit easy, if at all, on a standard US stamp, a commemorative, yes.

Interesting comments, Warrehouse. I measured the stamp as you suggested and the measurements would seem to agree with what you suggested.

However, I also found a second stamp with the same "NSBK" perfin and "broken" city overprint, however, this one shows what I believe to be a vertical line to suggest it is a box cancel rather than a precancel.

Either way, I don't think either are particularly valuable examples, I'm just interested to be able to properly identify them.

Thanks.

wt1, Agreed, the series of broken line(s) on the right side would imply a roller/box.
I thought it was too close to rule out without addition information & confirmation.

Thanks for checking!
