Maybe others on SCF know this well, but I happened to stumble across this website quite by accident. I always found it amusing that a US town named itself after a comedian - Chevy Chase. |

Isn't there more than one town called Chevvy Chase? I seem to remember an American friend telling me that once.

I think Chevy Chase MD preceded Chevy Chase the comedian. Perhaps he was named for the town. |

Been to quite a few of those uniquely named towns in MI I mean MN, IA, MO and WI. In defense of Loonyvile, MN, the loon is the state bird.

As it relates to Chevy Chase (the actor): Quote:

As a descendant of the Scottish Clan Douglas, the name "Chevy" seemed appropriate to her." While it may be a bit off topic, while looking this up I also found it interesting to realize that Chevy Chase (the actor) has quite an interesting family history (courtesy of Wiki, of course): Quote:

I didn't know that the name I used would be censored but honestly, I did hear of a town by that name there.
It is called Jack - - - Flats. I hope that gets through lol

You're right about the name ... wrong State, though. It's in Nevada. Look it up on the internet and it will give you a brief summary. It's a U.S. Government test area (like a lot of Nevada), so out of bounds for most, I suppose. |

I know another collector whom winters in Frost Proof, Florida. I always thought that was an interesting town name. Then again check out town names in Missouri and further South... |

Hope it's not censored, warrehouse. Actually, I did a bit more on-line research and found the area is a rather scary place. Look at this photo and accompanying text:  Quote:
How it got its name is essentially unknown. But name alone is not this city's only notoriety as it was the test site for Project Pluto, a program dedicated to nuclear powered engines. Today it still houses research facilities for the Nevada Research & Development Area within the Nevada Test Site, and is home to BREN Tower, the tallest scientific research tower in the world. Perhaps they should change it to Genius Flats with all the scientists around. Be careful when you decide to visit–time it wrong and you could get a glow instead of a tan. I also came upon a law firm soliciting business from those who may have contracted lung cancer from working at the site in years gone by (not surprising, I suppose). |
