Having lived in Nevada for several years in the early 1970's, I can shed a little light on the origin of the name. Many miners prospecting in the Nevada desert used the burro as their beast of burden. Many escaped and other were released. They proved to be a very adaptable animal and thrived in the area. Although the burro population has dwindled in central Nevada (the location of Jack--- Flats) they are still a common sight around Lake Mead. |

At some point in my life, I will make the journey to Pie Town, New Mexico. Who knew there was a town dedicated to pie? http://www.smithsonianmag.com/histo...0013841.htmlThe Pie Town, NM website lists the following: "The main activities are cowboying, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, pie baking/eating and enjoying a life well lived." Any town that can list pie eating as one of their main activities is OK by me. Some of the archival photos mentioned in the above article can be seen as a part of this excellent photo collection. http://extras.denverpost.com/archive/captured.htmlRyan |

I know of several distinct names that weren't on that list (surprisingly).
They got my favorite: Bucksnort, TN
They missed: Opp, AL Slate Lick, PA Buttermilk, TN Bundick, LA Pickering, LA Calf Creek, TX |

Hi In my home state of Maine there is a famous sign. Picture and quote from: http://postcardy.blogspot.com/2009/...gn-post.html Quote: This postcard shows a famous sign post located in Lynchville, Maine, at the junction of Routes 5 and 35. This sign post is said to have been erected about 1930. Mileage is given to what appear to be nine foreign countries or cities. Actually these are places in Maine that are named after foreign cities and countries. A 1988 New York Times article, On Maine's Grand Tour, Mexico Is North of Paris, has information about the towns named on this sign post as well as some others: Madrid, Belfast, Stockholm, Rome, Vienna, and Moscow Jerry B |

The scary thing is, I have relatives in 3 towns on the list, all in the same state... (New Mexico).
And Ryan... you can skip the pie in Pie Town... It is really overrated. The chicken fried steak in the cafe is quite wonderful though. If you make it in the fall, the green chili stew is supposedly good, but since they make it with pork, I don't have first hand knowledge. The area is pretty though, and you're just a short trip down the road from another good town name, Show Low, AZ. |

LOL. I have seen a sign like it at that same junction. I don't recall it looking exactly like that, it was awhile ago. But I have been to every town shown in the sign, plus the others mentioned.

Hi stampvirgin, Quote: I have seen a sign like it at that same junction. I don't recall it looking exactly like that, it was awhile ago. But I have been to every town shown in the sign, plus the others mentioned. Over 20 years ago I remember the sign looked pretty raunchy. Who knows what year the postcard was published. It is probably not much later than 1930. If you have traveled Maine another 'tourist destination' was the Desert of Maine which I see is still going strong (according to theinternet). In Maine we used to say that they took sand from Kennebunkport and spread it around. I have never been there. Nearest I have been was L.L.Bean. Jerry B |
