Maybe others on SCF know this well, but I happened to stumble across this website quite by accident. I find the info. quite interesting, entertaining and possibly even helpful to those looking at old postal history items: http://www.accuracyproject.org/towns.htmlEven though many of the names may only refer to sections of towns and were never legally recognized post offices, some of the entries are quite amusing, so I thought I'd share the link.

I always found it amusing that a US town named itself after a comedian - Chevy Chase. |

Isn't there more than one town called Chevvy Chase? I seem to remember an American friend telling me that once. Chicken Alaska always made me laugh... |

I think Chevy Chase MD preceded Chevy Chase the comedian. Perhaps he was named for the town. |

Been to quite a few of those uniquely named towns in MI I mean MN, IA, MO and WI. In defense of Loonyvile, MN, the loon is the state bird.

As it relates to Chevy Chase (the actor): Quote: "Chase was named for his adoptive grandfather Cornelius. The name Chevy was a nickname bestowed by his grandmother, derived from the medieval English Ballad of Chevy Chase. As a descendant of the Scottish Clan Douglas, the name "Chevy" seemed appropriate to her." While it may be a bit off topic, while looking this up I also found it interesting to realize that Chevy Chase (the actor) has quite an interesting family history (courtesy of Wiki, of course): Quote: "Cornelius Crane "Chevy" Chase (born October 8, 1943) was born in Lower Manhattan, New York City. His father, Edward Tinsley "Ned" Chase, was a prominent Manhattan book editor and magazine writer. His mother, Cathalene Parker (née Browning), a concert pianist and librettist, was the daughter of Miles Browning, who served a critical role at the Battle of Midway in World War II; she was adopted as a child by Cornelius Vanderbilt Crane, and took the name Cathalene Crane. Chase's maternal grandmother was an opera singer who performed several times at Carnegie Hall. Chase is a fourteenth-generation New Yorker, and was listed in the Social Register at an early age. His mother's ancestors arrived in Manhattan starting in 1624. Among his ancestors are New York City mayors Stephanus Van Cortlandt and John Johnstone; John Morin Scott, General of the New York Militia during the American Revolution; Anne Hutchinson, dissident Puritan preacher and healer; and Mayflower passengers and signers of the Mayflower Compact, John Howland and the Pilgrim colonist leader and spiritual elder of the Plymouth Colony, William Brewster. Chase's paternal grandfather was artist/illustrator Edward Leigh Chase, and his great-uncle was painter/teacher Frank Swift Chase. To give this post some sort of stamp collecting legitimacy, I wonder if U.S. Scott #550 (Signing of the Mayflower Compact) depicts any of Chevy Chase's ancestors noted in the above quote (?) |

You're right about the name ... wrong State, though. It's in Nevada. Look it up on the internet and it will give you a brief summary. It's a U.S. Government test area (like a lot of Nevada), so out of bounds for most, I suppose. |

I know another collector whom winters in Frost Proof, Florida. I always thought that was an interesting town name. Then again check out town names in Missouri and further South... |

Quote: I have a precancel overprint for Jack--- Flats, NV. Post it, please. I have been unable to find any reference to there ever being a post office in that area, so a precancel would be quite interesting. (PSS suggests it must be a Type 846 precancel, as that was the only one used there.) Incidentally, I found a newspaper article referring to a Jack--- Flat, CA. According to the article, the place got its name as a result of a locomotive who hit a Jack---. |

I'll try when I get home! But will it get censored?
I don't think a name of a real place should be censored! |

Hope it's not censored, warrehouse. Actually, I did a bit more on-line research and found the area is a rather scary place. Look at this photo and accompanying text: Quote: How it got its name is essentially unknown. But name alone is not this city's only notoriety as it was the test site for Project Pluto, a program dedicated to nuclear powered engines. Today it still houses research facilities for the Nevada Research & Development Area within the Nevada Test Site, and is home to BREN Tower, the tallest scientific research tower in the world. Perhaps they should change it to Genius Flats with all the scientists around. Be careful when you decide to visit–time it wrong and you could get a glow instead of a tan. I also came upon a law firm soliciting business from those who may have contracted lung cancer from working at the site in years gone by (not surprising, I suppose). |
