hello all

i was reading a post here today about dpos and I decided just for my interest to search a few of my covers.
i found a cover with the postmark of lawndale, nc.
i then googled about post offices and with what I can see there is no current listing for this city.

i found that there are only about 650 people living there as of 2000.
i would like more info about if dpo cancel have some value.

i want to thank you all because I learn more are more about stamps.
i will now have to searh my box of covers that I have to see if I have any dpos in my box.

If you're searching for DPO's and/or dates when they may have ceased operation, this is a good resource for you:

http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp

As for the cover shown, Lawndale, NC does have an active post office, located at 241 East Main Street, Lawndale, NC 28090-9644.

In fact, if you want to search for active post offices across the country, all you need do is consult this USPS link:

No problem.

By the way, I came across this family history site link that reprints an article from 1966 recalling the heyday of the Cleveland Mill & Power Company of Lawndale, NC, (the firm that sent the cover you have)...it makes for interesting reading for how the site operated in its day:

http://www.kahs.net/willis_article.htm

(Incidentally, as to the addressee (E.C. Beetem & Son of Carlisle, PA) it is noted that since 1914 they were one of the leading carpet manufacturers in the country, with dye works in Carlisle and two mills in Philadelphia.)
