Hi,

I did this on another Stamps board and the results were interesting. So let's try it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year there was an article in Linn's Stamp News about stamps that are related to one's lives. I thought it might be interesting to have members here show and tell about such stamps and why one collects a certain country or area.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

In my case I was collecting France and United States. I had a US stamp that I could not identify. Next door to the office where I worked were two stamp experts, Herbert Bloch and Alex Rendon. I asked Alex about the stamp and Mr. Bloch asked why collect US.

I said what else and Alex said collect Colombia, South America (one of his areas of expertise). He gave me some stamps to take home and look at. My wife took a look at the following stamp and declared that it was the house she was brought up in:

Since that time my main collection has been Colombia. The collection is like a photo album for my wife. Some distant relatives are depicted on stamps and famous Colombians used to visit her aunts who were concert pianists.

The house was once declared a national monument and once belonged to the cathedral (you can see the cupola behind the house). Now it is owned privately. The famous fountain is almost 300 years old. The last battle of independence for Colombia was fought in the province of Boyaca and Tunja was the capital of Boyaca.

Now why do I also collect Ecuador and Venezuela? My sister-in-law lives in Quito, Ecuador and Simon Bolivar, the Liberator, lived in Caracas, Venezuela.

So this is my relationship to stamps and why my particular avatar.

What's your story?

Jerry B

That's fascinating to be able to associate a stamp with your families history.
