I have been fortunate to find websites (for Poland and Russi) where people/organizations posted pictures of most stamps by year. This helped and I only was left with a few stragglers I could not find. Does anyone know if there is a website showing stamps for Hungary. I ended up with a small stack of ones I could not find, or just don't recognize what I'm seeing with what the catalog is describing in words.

Thanks

Why not post them here Stampdog?

For your Poland query
Maybe try this one stampdog,
http://www.stampspoland.nl/
Still some navigating to do when you enter,
but they have 8000 images.

I do not have my catalogues on hand, my database
showed 276 stamps of 60 grozy the value you showed,
but none of them included your example :(

As for posting my Hungary stamps, there are quite a few. I figured if I could find a few more myself, that would leave less for others to have to help me with. I will make one more pass at my catalog and then if I still can't find them, I'll post them here. There always seems to be someone who sees something I did not.

Just post them all here, stampdog - I for one enjoy the challenge of tracking things down. And there seem to be lots of other SCF members who feel the same!

I decided to wade through that stack and identified all but 6. Even though one had a year on it, I just couldn't find it in that year. Also, two of the overprints I just couldn't find. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks all. Most of the time I can find them once I determine the year, but not always, especially on some of the older stamps like #4,5,&6. Sometimes there isn't a picture so I have to search other similar stamps to find the "design" then look for the color combinations with that design in other years. Not knowing the language doesn't help as well.

Pat

I have Scott on cd and there is "search" utility to look for words in the catalogue. For #2 I did a search with the name of the castle and it give me a list with different stamps with this name on it. I just had to click each one to find your stamp. Daniel

The other trick is to use Google Image with the words on the stamp. In the case of 6, I typed in the first word, which I thought was "szonykistvan". It came up with "szonyi istvan" and a lot of paintings that looked as if they could be by the same artist as in the stamp. So I searched for "szonyi istvan stamp", and this is the link for the first image shown:
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-455...i-circa.html

Istvan Szonyi is the artist (in Hungarian the surname is often put first). Rather interesting work - I must check if I've got any pics by him among my Art collection . . .

(I can't show the actual image, as it is copyright)

If there are dates on the stamp (eg dates of birth or death), I put those in with the name - Google Image nearly always comes up trumps.

Thanks guys, those are great tips. I didn't think of searching for them that way. I have the paper scott catalogs, I had thought about buying them on cd. Will have to watch prices on the cd's and maybe get a set. Again, THANKS!

. . . while for me they are some of the most attractive stamps around - especially Poland, Czechoslovakia, Slovakia and the Czech republic - many little masterpieces.

But that's what's so great about our hobby - it's no more and no less that what each one of us wants to make of it!
