Album, Any Worth?

Hello there.. As I lack any catalog for foreign stamps I have trouble IDing and valueing my stamps. I wonder if there are any "World Stamps" equivalent to the Krause Catalogs?

I've seen some "World Stamps, countries A-c", however I'd like A-Z.. Due to the vast variety of stamps I've got..

Here comes some pictures from one of my foreign albums with American stamps. Are any of them rare/uncommon or worth anything above.. 15$?

The Fort Wayne Ind. precancel on the 1 cent Franklin is nice. Not being a precancel collector (yet--the urge is getting stronger) I don't know the value.

The other stamps, with perhaps a few exceptions are all common stamps of minimal value. They are nice to have though. The two Garfields --fifth row, the first two-- and the two Websters --third panel firth row down-- are above minimal value, just to mention 4 stamps. the Grants and the Jacksons may be above minimal value.

Oh, I see you may be a new member with 18 posts. Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of very nice people here who know a huge amount of information. I would say that as a whole, we have a veritable encyclopedia here.

Well I don't know any value for any of these stamps.. I'd sell a 1cent for 1 cent ;)

I guess I have many many hundreds (if not thousands) of US-stamps, all unsorted in heaps in boxes. I don't know when I will have time to sort them all, however I'd need a good catalog. So my question remains, are there any equivalent to Krause World Coins catalogs? Or are there only these "Scotts with A-C" etc?

If you have a fast Internet connection, then Mystic's online stamp catalogue will help you a bit with basic i.d. (Consider the prices as only guidelines, showing relative values.) It won't teach you how to i.d. the trickier varieties, but it will let you match up lots of images with your stamps:

If you want a specialized catalog for only US stamps:

Scott Specialized Catalog of US Stamps
Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalog Part 22 United States

As an alternative, the current Scott Standard WW Catalog Volume 1 contains the basic US listings as well as countries from A-B. But this is a standard catalog and does not contain listings for minor US stamp varieties and doesn't contain anywhere close to the wealth of information in the specialized catalogs.

The SG Stamps of the World catalog (not sure which volume contains US) is another option, but the listings are VERY simplified.

For US stamps Scott's Specialized US is the best.

Scott's also have a 6-volume worldwide general catalog

Many feel that to get the best info on British Commonwealth stamps and Great Britain then Stanley Gibbons Stamps of the World catalogues are the ones to use.

Michel in Germany is the best for Germany and I think has worldwide catalogues also.

Each country probably has specialized catalogues that are better than others.

Facit for Scandinavia I hear. If they have worldwide catalogues perhaps this would be better for you as the language would be easier?

Used copies can be found on ebay or Delcampe or similar venues for cheaper than new.

Some have Classic catalogues that only list up to 1940 or so for worldwide in one catalogue. Scott's is one.

English isn't any issue really, and it would be good to learn the English words for all the details as well as the Swedish ones. Thanks for the tip though!

As a general rule of thumb, Tomten, I'd say that stamps are worth little or nothing if they're used. It's only if you managed to find an old album full of mint stamps that you should get excited.

Of course, there are exceptions, like early Weimar Republic Germany, where in many cases used stamps are worth far more than mint.

But, generally speaking, old used stamps do not rank very high in the scale of things as a potential income stream.

So let's see your German stamps!

I've noticied that in the catalogs. However with the vast amount of stamps that I've got.. a few dollars per stamp is very much when dealing with this type of quantity. I think at least 80% of my foreign stamps are used, sadly. Although my Swedish stamps, which consists of some ten-thousands, unsorted, there I guess it would be fifty-fifty mint/used.

I don't think my grandpa had any foreign rarities really, but some might be a tad more uncommon.

The Swedish stamps sound promising. Quite a lot of people outside Sweden happen to collect Swedish stamps and they sell quite well. You may find some more valuable items there.

You think it would profit more to sell them on ebay, rather than on the Swedish Tradera (same as ebay)?

I find that common stamps from my country sell/trade better overseas so I would say ebay or one of the other auction sites (delcampe, stamphead etc) is better.
By better I mean achieving a higher price.

You could also offer some for sale/trade here after you reach 50 posts
