I am new to collecting and started an album for my son of world stamps. I am joining with prodding from gussyboy (who is obsessed with stamps!). I hope to learn a lot here. I have a question about watermarks--I don't understand what they are?

Hi Jenmc. Watermarks are designs or letters imprinted into the stamp paper during the manufacturing process. Here is a link to an article with examples..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watermark On US stamps, they stopped using watermarks back in the 1920-1930 range, so nothing since WWII has any watermarks as such. Welcome to the stamp community jenmc!

Watermarks were used as a security device on government paper to discourage counterfeiting of postage and revenue stamps.
