My deceased older brother left me a collection of 2 cent Hardings on cover. Mostly Camden area, but some others. Hope they are interesting due to the cachets or return. 6 should be enough of these Jim

Very nice Orange Dee-Light advertising cover. It looks like she is having a glass of wine in 1924 during the Prohibition era. Also I like the cover with "unclaimed" and the "return to sender" finger. I have often thought of starting a collection of "return to sender" finger covers. |

Thanks all. Ok for Tom , here are some more. The second from the bottom is the back of 2 of the covers indicating someone ( not my brother as he would have only been 2 yrs old) bought them at an auction in 1937 for 2 1/6 cent. I like the one from the sanitary pottery maker :) Jim |

That New Kensington caught my eye. It is the least colorful and dramatic of the bunch, however that is where my father's family hails from.
They have been there, or close, since before the civil war. I have never lived there though, and was last there around 1973, as a toddler.
I have a great deal of cover from there, as all the family stamp collectors come from there.
If you ever thought of trading that one off, let me know. I might have something you can use.
Thanks for sharing! Dave |

Hi Jim......
Thanks for posting more......like a lot of collections, any item taken by itself might be considered of little value.....but when viewed as a group they can be most impressive. Seeing more would be great. How many such covers did your brother have ? |

I do someplace......Now the question is where and when will I dig to it :), but these were probably the better ones or I would have kept them together. There is another set of covers that had to do with his business and supplier. He had a Tractor repair and supply shop here in the rural farm area. I will run into them again also. I am glad you like them, he would have been happy that others are enjoying his collecting.

Nice little collection DesertGem..i feel I do the best I can at the level I am..at the stamp club Thursday night a fellow came in who had been a dealer for 40 years..He asked if he could show his covers..he had things that you see in the auction ads realizing thousands of dollars strips of 30 cent orange 19th century Franklins..covers from the place where Union and Confederate mail was exchanged during the civil war..etc etc...he accumulated these over 40 years and as a dealer I am sure he got some terrific deals..its beautiful to see these things..but I am not envious..our collections are a personal thing..i can not understand someone buying someone elses collection...they should be built not bought !! |

A very Good Point. Some collections I purchased almost whole, like the Swiss soldier stamps since I hadn't seen them before and I had built up a nice Swiss collection, but most were built over 15 or so years before I put them away for the next 20 until just recently. But back then I had several dealers who would send me a whole album and after asking which Scott's I had access to would say " Ok, 1/4 of scotts value, initial the empty space". I would go through and get the ones I wanted, add up the scott's value, divide it and send a check and the album back. I liked it much better than the APS program. I have looked but not found any of the same type of dealer. Of course, they didn't have ebay back then |

Desertgem...yeah pick em at 1/4 catalog is not a bad deal...i get the APS circuit books for our club and some months its hard to realize 20 dollars for the box...some guys have all the stamps...some complain the books are picked over too much..some say that 50 percent of catalog is too much..but look what it costs the guy who makes the book..APS charges him commission, he has to pay postage and insurance...if I need a stamp I do not mind half catalog and the club pays the postage !! |
