Springfield, MA can be a complicated precancel to collect because there are at least 18 different types for that city. Here are mine, which I believe are the same type as the image you show, so I don't think it's a previously unlisted variety:
I, too, would be interested in what precancel type this is considered to be.
My "problem" when collecting precancel types, is that I get thrown by the fact that it may have punctuation (comma after city or period after state abbreviation) when in the examples shown above, they have neither. I guess I have to ignore the punctuation and just focus on the spacing and font sizes.
Thanks fellas! Chasa is correct - the description is correct on the specs, however I have the habit of comparing the stamp side by side with the diagram. The diagram for 236 has the lines too wide for this example and well past the 10-12mm in the description.
I need to pay more attention to the description in the specs!
If you really want to know where that background came from, I was shredding some old banking material (checks, statements, etc.) that are no longer needed as we enter 2011, and this was the cover from an old passbook savings account closed long ago. It made for a nice background and good contrast to the stamps, so I decided to use it to put a bit of color into the scan.
See how we stamp collectors make use of virtually every piece of material that comes into our hands!
