I'm starting on my early USA stamps and in way over my head! I'll have lots of dumb questions in the next few days. This is the first one.

what does Soft Porous paper look like?

I have 3 stamps all same type all with different looking backs but I cant figure out how to tell if any are soft porous paper, heck all paper feels soft to me.

Thanks however I found that one with the search function, but I guess I just need to keep looking at the early stamps till I find an obvious porous paper stamp that I can use to compare.

those 2 pictures almost look the same to me, I guess I'm looking for those clearish "spots" on the paper

Edwin, the whole paper issue takes a little time to master. A good comparison is a Scott 210 or 213 (soft) and a 1869 Scott 113 (hard). After some study the appearance and texture differences will become apparent.

What Russ said, find a stamp that ONLY came in soft porous paper, then find a stamp that only came in hard white. Use those as your references.
Soft porous is just that. Look at perf tips under magnification and see it there are a lot of strands hanging. Also looking at both with a very bright light behind them will really help you figure it out.
