There's something odd about the '2' in the surcharge on this copy of Travancore SG O106, the 2 Cash on 1½ Chuckrams Service stamp of 1943:



Here is a close-up of the '2':



How could you get doubling of the '2' without doubling the 'CASH'? Was it a partial double print? A kiss print? A shift of the make-ready?

Any suggestions?

That is quite striking, The 2 not applied separately to the CASH ?(Too obvious). Do you have a scan of a normal, the more you post on the indian states the more interested I get, but I'm not sure I'm ready to go down that rabbit hole.

although I don't know that it gets us any forrarder.

Not that I want to lead you astray, StampStudy ... but this period of Travancore does have quite a deal of technical interest, and for the most part, the material is still relatively inexpensive and available.
