Here's a general question about hinges. I know that different manufacture of hinges will have different adheasion to the stamp. But what is the purpose of folded to unfolded hinges. Is it just ease of use. And would the propertys be the same to the manufacture. I personaly so far use the Fold-O-Hinge from Cohnn and have a couple of packages left. But once I get going again with my collection I know I will need to get more. Unfortunately they are not made anymore. So if I do find them would there be a difference with folded or unfolded?

Just about all modern hinges are folded. In the olden days, hinges were not folded -- you had to fold them yourself. When pre-folded hinges first came out, it was sort of a innovation/break-thru, and so was heavily marketed as a "feature". After that, it became run-of-the-mill/expected.

I find that mounting with hinges is time-intensive enough without having to fold them.

Here's a "modern" package of hinges I bought a few years ago that I thought were standard folded hinges, but when I opened the package they were unfolded. (So the unfolded ones are still out there!)

I'm still using them up. In fact, I group about 10 or so together, fold them and then take a pair of scissors and cut them in half to double the number of hinges. I'm working on collections of older precancels, so I'm not terribly worried about hinges damaging the stamps, and mounting them looks so much nicer, and is so much easier than going through hundreds of glassine envelopes.
