I went to the Post Office today and bought some new stamp sheets. These are the ones I got today: Front Back Front Back I buy a new one as often as I can. I would love to see scans of stamp sheets of current postage that members here have bought within the past couple years. Lucky

I'm not going to be using the sheets that I've been buying for postage. Instead I'm stashing them away in hopes that 25 or 30 years down the road they will have either kept their original value or increased in value. I figure that Social Security will be a thing of the past 25 years from now when I would be eligible to receive it. So basically I'm kind of making an investment for my retirement with every current sheet I buy. I look at it like a win/win situation. If they go up in value or lose value I'm buying and saving something I love so I can't go wrong. Here's a couple more I bought at the Post Office within the last year or so. Front Back Front Back Lucky |

You would be better off with municipal bonds or the stock market for investing the bulk of your money. At best you might get a 5% return over 25 years which works out to an annualized return of much less than 1%. |

I do enjoy collecting new issues. I like the variety and freshness they bring to a collection. I usually buy singles for my collection if possible. Unless I am planning of using them for postage or a cover project I don't buy a sheet. Of course, some issue formats are not available as singles. This past year I've really cut back on purchases, I normally try to get 1 of each new issue. I think my priorities changed and household expenses cut into my extra money. Maybe I should look into selling some of my extra and try to inflate my hobby budget. I've never been good at letting stamps go. |

Quote: I look at it like a win/win situation. If they go up in value or lose value I'm buying and saving something I love so I can't go wrong. Lucky, Hold on to that "something I love" thought because the likelihood of those sheets going up in value is pretty low when you consider the time-value of money and that there are quite a few people out there who are doing exactly the same thing. I bought a sheet of the 50 state flags in 1976 for $6.50 with the thought that in 35 years it would be worth alot more -- today's catalog value is $17.50. However, a quick ebay search today shows that sellers can't seem to move the sheet at face value. Of the five sheets being auctioned, only two have bids (one for $6.35 and the other for $3.58). I doubt the other three lots will attract bids as their opening prices are above face value and I imagine the two lots with bids won't close much higher than their current levels. The moral of my story is buy stamps for the enjoyment you get from them and use your 401k and IRA contributions to get you through retirement! Steve |

Tomiseksj,
that would be the exact reason I posted the Sam Houston my Grandfather must have seen great things for this stamp as my parents have been using it for postage for 1 1/2 years now. I'm not sure how many sheets we had but I have 2-3 broken up sheets left.
SO stamps are for collecting, 401k is for retirement, and Sam Houston is for fun and additional postage.
btw, I rescued as many corner blocks as I could when I found out the parents were using the MNH sheets. |

I purchase mine for either postage or Theme. If any part of collecting Stamps is for an investment then prepare to lose money as it is a hobby. A couple of other points would be that the satisfaction in a sheet of Stamps for $8.00 goes a lot further than 2 McDonalds value meals, and also these newer stamps could be the last of their kind with the forever and NVI stamps being the top priority for Postal revenue. |

Here is a sheet (Scott 2870) that I will hang on to while keeping my expectations of significant financial gain in check (my father was one of the 150,000 lottery winners). |

Here's a couple more that I bought (I believe technically they would be considered booklets) FRONT BACK FRONT BACK I've read your replies and I appreciate all of your advise. I can't predict the future value of stamps so this is not something I can depend on. With that said, I have a funny story for all of you. When I was at the Post Office buying some sheets the Postal Worker was flipping through the pages of stamps showing me what she had and I was picking some that I liked the looks of and then there was a sheet towards the back of her book that caught my eye. I told her I would like one of them and she looked at me and said "Are you sure you want one of those?" And I said "Why wouldn't I?" and she said "I'm just checking because the sheet costs $360.00" My jaw hit the ground with a HUH?? WHAT?? as it turned out it was a sheet of $18.00 stamps. YIKES!! Please keep posting your sheets. Lucky |

Some people say that buying mint stamps from the PO is a losing financial proposition but its a nice feeling to go out and spend a bit of money to bring home a little something that you can cherish for years time to come. |
