The recent post about a Route 66 Topical Precancel Collection inspires me to ask if there is a source for other Topical Precancels that one may consider collecting.

Being from New England, a small, but interesting precancel topical might be for the Old Boston Post Road towns from New York to Boston.

I was also thinking about the towns that may cross the path of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, being the first toll road across that State.

These are much smaller collections, than that for Route 66 or similar, but may be more in tune to the beginner precancel collector rather than the specialist.

Does anyone know if such lists already exist?

I am not sure about any lists like that. I did find one such list for my route 66 collection that a John Deboo put together, which I expanded upon myself and with the help of warrehouse. I have considered doing one for the Lincoln Highway and other old 2 lane highway and byways.

The Lincoln Highway would be a great and challenging project. This and Route 66 are the two most famous and historic roads that have a large following!

Go for it!

Wow, the Wikipedia article on the Lincoln Highway is excellent.

I'm getting rather off topic re precancelled stamps here, but for those with access to PBS stations, keep your eye out for broadcasts of Ken Burns' excellent program "Horatio's Drive", a documentary about the first American cross-country automobile trip in 1903. A wealthy man made a bet that he could cross the U.S. in less than 90 days, and spent a small fortune attempting to win the bet. Considering there were only 150 miles of paved roads in the nation at the time, it was by no means a sure thing.

How about US 1 from Key West to Maine. Surely a massive undertaking.

I am starting to believe what I hear about Henry Ford.
He refused to contribute to the Lincoln Highway.
That seems absurd.

There are some suggestions within old precancel catalogues & guidebooks.

Collect all the T&T from a state or region (example: New England)

Collect precancels from capital cities, past & present or county seats.

Collect DPO's [Dead Post offices]

Precancel towns within Indian Reservations.

Along important rivers or even canals, (Mississippi, Erie Canal)

Highways as suggested already.

Towns of the Great lakes.

Towns of Mormon territory.

Towns off shore (islands).

Towns with a common name (Washington)

etc.

I've been on a good portion of the A1A in Florida. I did like Ken Burn's series on the National Parks. There is also a really good book on The Lincoln Highway by Michael Wallis. The Great River Road would be interesting, plus I could do a cover collection using the Great River Road stamp.
