I've been trying to find the answer to this, but am unable too. Why is it bad for stamps to be stored in the basement? I think if the basement is finished then it would be safe from dampness and mold since it is fully carpeted and such. What do you guys think?

If the climate is controlled, yes, OK.

If the walls are insulated to prevent dampness coming through the cement walls (water does seep through cement), yes, OK.

If the walls are of stone, No, because of condensation on the cold stones, thus dampness, and a breading ground for mold and bugs.

In an above-ground, insulated, heated, lighted basement then yes, OK.

It is just that the chance of having dampness or damp darkness is such an increased worry in most basements that you hear the big No a lot.

Moisture and dust are a stamp's worst enemies, so if you can store stamps in a space, for a long period of time, without damp, rot, mildew, rodents or bugs getting at them, even by accident, then go ahead, I would think.

I am open to suggestions and corrections of course.

As stated by Puzzler, humidity, mold, fungus and lack of air circulation is the problem. Basements in many area are a problem.

In Australia it would be difficult... because we don't have basements! As a general rule anyway.
