Surely it was to honor the passing of one of my favorite authors, Edith Wharton. Given that such events are planned in advance, they must have contracted for her death. :-)

Sorry, I can't help. But here are some other 11 August 1937 events:

In Switzerland, the Zionist Congress decides to negotiate with Britain on the Palestine plan.
Ballet dancer Allegra Kent, British actress Anna Massey, and the late director John Abraham were born.
Chinese Battleship Tung Chi was sunk.
El Salvador withdrew from the League of Nations

Too funny.
"last day cover" plays havoc searching my database
I reduce to "last" and I get a plethora of
"plastic","custers last stand" etc
I thought I had a last day cover, alas, it was a
"Last Sunday Postmark" of GB

It appears to be so innocuous,
as to suggest a deeper meaning,
but it appears to be the date the stamp
is withdawn <officially> from sale
by the issuing authority.

I looked up the font of knowledge "ask Phil.com" :)
nothing there

Here are "Last dates of Issue" of Aussie material
and a Machin.
Does that help?
