Just a curiosity, but does anyone know how this 1972 first day cancel postal card could be re-used in 1974 for regular postal duty?

Was there some sort of an allowance that these cards were still valid as postage even after being sold with the the first day cancel? (I note that the cancel merely says US Postal Service with no city/state mentioned in that marking.)

Am I following?

It was been hand-stamped on the first day of issue, but not actually mailed?
Then later it was mailed to the stamp club?

Still, there should have been a stamp for the 1974 usage.

Maybe since the first day banner is well below the actual postage, it was just an oversight that slipped through?

Curious.
