I spent some time at Richard Friedberg's table at the Boxborough Show this morning. I came home with this 2c Dalley's Galvanic Horse Salve stamp. I never realized there was a woman standing outside the farmhouse in the background!

Wow, Tom! Beautiful , beautiful stamp! I'm not sure I would have noticed the woman in the background had you not pointed her out! She's way back there, but I can still make her out. Thanks for sharing!

Is that 'U.S. Inter. Rev.' printed on the left? Was this a tax stamp? That is beautiful. |

T, that is a gerat stamp!. Nope I don't have any of those. Been looking for a marijuana tax stamp, but they seem to be scare and very popular even by non-revenue collectors! Thanks for showing! Maybe we can convert everyone to BOB.

Thanks everyone. I have been looking for this one for a long time. Quote: Is that 'U.S. Inter. Rev.' printed on the left? Was this a tax stamp? Yes, it is a "private die proprietary" revenue stamp. These were tax stamps that were required to be affixed to certain products to show that the tax had been paid. Products that were taxed included patented (proprietary) medicines and also veterinary medicines like this horse salve. Originally the government printed proprietary tax stamps for general use but later allowed companies to design their own stamps. Many companies designed very elegant stamps which served to build their brand. Since each company had its own stamps, they were printed with "private dies." Also many of these stamps you find today are faulty because they were affixed to a paper box, tin or glass bottle and were usually torn when the container was opened. |

That's a really interesting piece, Tom. Much of the time the BOB stuff is much more interesting than the pedestrian regular issues! |
