In today's (1/26/2011) news about the artist commissioned to design the Celebrate! Stamp scheduled to be issued in March:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/1102...20590-84.stm

Interesting read, with one notable omission:

Quote:
"Mr. Flechtner, who declined to specify the commission he received for his first Postal Service project other than to say it was fair but by no means exorbitant, expects the stamp's issuance will lead to more exhibitions of his work and commissions for large public art works."

With the USPS's financial struggles, I just wonder how much they pay for these artists to create the stamps we use?

I really like the new Celebrate stamp much more than the previously issued one. Some stamp images, especially definites/regular, used are very cheap as they are basically clip art and the USPS pays a nominal copyright fee. Some artists aren't even aware that there image is being used or considered as a stamp until it is released and someone tells them.

I love to see neat neon signs! Especially, googie style from the 1950's.

I am so confused...everything that I've seen and read about this stamp says it is to be issued on March 25, 2011, yet I just downloaded a copy of USAPhilatelic which says (on page 6) that it was already issued on February 11, 2011. Who's right here? Is USAPhilatelic providing erroneous information?

The actual Celebrate! Stamp was issued today (03/25/2011). Here's an example of the final product:

As you can see, it's not as intensely colored as the promotional artwork would have had us believe, nor does it look especially "neon", in my opinion.

Still, it's a nice stamp, although I can imagine that cancellations will be hard to decipher because of the predominately black background.

Nice! I also picked up a sheet of the stamps and had a blank cover serviced, I'll add my cachet later (hopefully). I also was the first person to request them and the packet had to be opened. I asked for the top insert stock card from the printer and promptly added a stamp and canceled it. I liked it because it had the stamp image printed on it.

Nice stamp, I'm a sucker for neon lights like that though.
