You should be holding on to it. Just like everything, meters have their devotees. (I assume that is what this is.) I think there might have been more to the meter, to the left what you have, but I don't know for sure...

I don't try to be encyclopedic with them, but I do like having a few of them from the postal-history standpoint.

If you want to get rid of it I am interested. That is one thing I don't have in my WWII collection. Just let me know.

The Wikipedia article states, 'Germany was an early user of metered mail with experimental franking of live mail occurring in January 1923.'

I've got a German meter stamp dated 30.11.1922. This must be among the very earliest examples. It looks identical to the Bafra types this webpage states first appeared in June 1923!

I wonder how 'collectible' it would be.

Does anyone know anything about the origins of meter stamps?

Thanks, Russ. That's actually where I found the statement that the first 'experimental franking of live mail' occurred in Germany in January '23. My example suggests the date actually needs to be pushed back a little.

This is the meter stamp in question:

Sure looks like Nov 30,1922. The catalog (website) was last update for 2008. I would try to send the scan to someone it could be a EDU? Maybe here Forschungsgemeinschaft Post- und Absenderfreistempel e.V. (Germany). Web site: www.fg-freistempel.de
