I know that it is an optical illusion, but it is so real looking. I guess it is in the same category as the large moon on the horizon illusion compared with overhead.

My catalogs don't list size, but could 1 be from the flat plate printing of 1923 and the other from the rotary press printing of 1931 ?

The difference between flat and rotary printings is very slight and wouldn't be visible to that extent. I think the consensus here is that it is an optical illusion caused by the precancel. It is a darn good illusion.

I'm still not sold on it being an optical illusion. While the pre-cancel lettering gets in the way, it looks as if there is space (1st stamp) between the head and the oval, while the 2nd stamp the head appears to butt up against the oval. Any chance of re-scanning to larger images ? or measure the open areas around the head to the inner part of the oval ?
