This is one of the better machine cancels and had widespread use in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Most are from Universal machines of the C and D series.
Interesting comments about widespread use of this cancel in the "1920's and 1930's". Here's evidence of the cancel in use as late as 1941.
Also, around 1940 they "modernized" the plane and reworked the cancel as shown below.
I find it interesting that in these examples from Philadelphia, the "modernized" plane is on a cancel dated 1940 and the "older" plane is on a cancel dated 1941.
How do you know all these cancels Russ? seriously, I have collected forever and don't know cancel types and have the hardest time understanding how people know what position a certain stamp came from. Is there a way I can learn or do I have to spend years studying. I unerstand part of it must be accumulated knowledge?
I always liked that cancel and thought it would be neat to havea USA Airmail stamp collection with stamps that had this cancel! I keep every one I come across.
