Unusual but sweet. Notice the 2c bank check stamp used to mail this unusual item date 17 Nov 1864. Yep it's a tin plate picture of (someone). Cute picture. Any others like this out there? - Jeff

There used to be a tax on photographs, payment of which is shown by a stamp affixed to the back. Someone will have good details of this, I'm sure.

I never knew about that tax until it was mentioned here, so I looked it up and came up with this quote:

Quote:
A tax on all photographs sold in the United States from 1 September 1864 to 1 Aug 1866 required the application of a revenue stamp. Continuous photographers cancelled the stamp by writing their initials and the day's date on the face. The cancelled tax stamps may be adhered to the back of an image case or an uncased tintype.

Here's a link to the source of the information which has quite a bit of interesting information on tintypes:

Do an ebay search for "CDV" and you'll pull up a boatload of them.

They're not necessarily expensive, although depending on the subject matter of the photo, the location of the photographer, and/or the cancel, they can bring relatively big bucks.

I only have a few of mine imaged thus far. I have another 40 or 50 all with handstamped or printed cancels that I need to get around to processing at some point.

If you want to view a magnificent exhibit on these, Bruce Baryla's 8-frame exhibit is phenomenal and extremely educational. I've bought some of his duplicates over the years, but he has some truly exceptional items:

Here is one of my favorites from my collection, that I picked up from Richard Friedberg at Chicagopex in November. Not only a margin imprint single, but a scarce stencil cancel to boot:

They used the wrong stamp, though. It isn't a bank check!

Using the appropriate revenue type for the document was only required for the first few months of the taxation. There were enough complaints from business owners about having to stock too many denominations and types, that this requirement was repealed, after which any documentary could be used.
