First and foremost, this forum is awesome. Especially since no one flamed me for posting in another thread without introduction or whatnot etc.
Ok so my brother found a large stamp collection leftover from our late grandfather and was wondering if you guys can help me out. Especially with the Bavarian stamp I posted earlier in another thread. Now I will be posting each stamps that I cannot find in google (sometimes I get lazy, dont we all) and I will post one each day. So check daily for stamps that maybe you might be interested in for tradings and whatnot.

Welcome. From the other thread...
Bavaria #237, from 1920, 20pf overprinted on 3pf, catalogue minimum value (.20).
(Trading does take awhile...14 days, fifty posts. Hang around, ask questions, look at stamps...it'll fly by.) |

Welcome iNkredibo to this great website. Ask your questions and someone will be more than willing to provide help. I know, I am new to SFC and have been helped by great people with lots of stamp knowledge. In addition to asking help here with identification of stamps, you might consider going to your library to see if they have current copies of the Scott stamp catalogues.

Hello again iNkredibo. To get your post count up it would be better for you if you created a new topic for every question / stamp you have. And name the country name in the topic title.
It's easier to find help that way and also help people who come along after searching for info on similar items.
Oh, it also helps you find the information at a later date also.
So for this one you could have put Cameron triangle help identify or some such wording. Even if you don't know the country then some description is better than none. Example, some people collect odd-shaped stamps or just triangle -shaped stamps, or flowers.
Pretty stamp by the way. |

No one gets flamed here, it is a feel good site, just be careful with the laziness though, everyone is expected to put some effort in, with ID, it takes members some time to ID as well. If you post too many, someone will notice |

The condition is OK, it is however the commonest 19th century US cut square - U311. It is of some interest because it is VERY similar to U318 - they are hard to tell apart. On a site like ebay, where sellers choose to identify their wares optimistically, these are often sold as U318's. Not to single out ebay - you see the same kind of bad dealer behaviour at your local stamp bourses. This is one US stamp that has a built-in red-flag attached to it! CV's: U311=0.20 U318=12.50 |

Typical with a lot of early US cut squares, there are a lot of options that need to be reviewed in order to identify your example.
A look at the Scott Catalog suggests that you could have either a (U71) variety or a (U72) variety with Scott Catalog Numbers varied between U311 through U323. The varieties are explained as follows:
(U71 Variety): Bust points between second and third notches of inner oval; ear is indicated by one heavy line; one vertical line at corner of mouth.
(U72 Variety): Upper part of head more rounded, ear indicated by two curved lines with two locks of hair in front; two vertical lines at corner of mouth.
Unfortunately, those subtle differences cannot be identified from the scan you provide as there is not enough detail.
When you do figure out what variety you have, then you must consider the various papers that the envelope was printed on including standard white, amber, oriental buff, manila or amber manila. Those colors can sometimes be quite challenging to identify when you have to separate the original color from whatever toning or yellowing may have occurred in the 120-odd-years since those envelopes were printed (1887-1894).
Maybe others on SCF can provide more information. |
