I would say it is a fading issue since the postmark ink is faded almost as equally as the stamp is. If the stamp was that faded originally or before cancellation, the ink would be much darker and opaque. IMO, since the cancellation is almost entirely worn away on the stamp on the left, I would think time, UV, and dust/grit have contributed to the deterioration over the last 125 years. I would put my money on it that the entire stamps are somewhat thinner and more flexible/fragile than normal.
