I told you not to take that tag off the mattress. Indiana evidently had a bedding tax. And I am not checking any deeper into that one!

First I can recall of Indiana's example. These are sometimes collected on piece, with a mattress tag attached. I think one or two were posted here a while back. New York, maybe?

And evidently a very sophisticated bedding tax as they had a rouletted and perforated stamp. Wonder why?

Well, I used to rely on my good looks,
that proved fruitless,
I should have bought some stamps.

Why DID they have such inspections anyway? Were early mattresses and pillows filled with used napkins or something?

There is a great organization called the "State Revenue Society" The SRS has published a great catalog of State Revenue stamps. The 2nd printing was completed in 2008 with established catalog number, pictures, descriptions, usage and values of all 50 states and DC. The catalog system used is based by state the grouped by types of revenue. The SRS catalog is is the best source of information of state revenues I have yet found. For those of you interested in the in SRS you can contact them directly by e-mail: smtroutman@atlanticbb.net

The Indiana bedding stamp appears to be a BD6 if the perf is a roulette is 5 1/2 valued at $3.00. the Main stamp is BD1 valued at $2.00, the New York's are depending on perf could be BD4/BD5 etc.
