If you only have one stamp but it has the edge with a number on it does it make it more valuable? Is this a sheet number or a block number? Is it better to tear off the edges or leave them on? Thanks in advance for your help.

In my experience, plate number singles can be slightly more valuable, but not always. IMHO, I would not remove the selvage. I think it adds an interesting touch. If it won't fit into the space in an album, save it elsewhere and pick up another example to use in the album.

It is better left on. It distinguishes the stamp from all other plain singles and adds appeal.
There is a special club for plate number single collectors called The American Plate Number Single Society.
