Just found this one. I know it's a Type 247 precancel, but was curious about the mark to the left of the State name. Is it anything other than a printing flaw?

great scan wt1 I could blow it up huge. Turns out to be a "pacman" eating one of its little dots. seriously just looks like a stamping flaw with extra ink. that precancel had quite a bit of ink on all the lettering. (and it really was a great scan to enlarge) |

Thanks for the info. As to the scan, I intentionally enhanced the resolution to pickup the detail of the ink for my question and then used VSO Image Resizer to get it down to under the 90KB scan maximum for the site. I guess it works (at least for single stamps). It would be too space intensive to do it that way for anything larger. |

There is a term in philately called a "confetti flaw" where either a punched hole or a piece of perforated paper adheres to the printing plate.
Your dot or "pacman" doesn't seem to fit any of those sizes.

It is most likely a "Nail Hole". These are indentations in the precancel plate caused by the nails or screws used to attach the rubber or metal 'plate' to a wood backing. They are quite common on handstamped precancels - I don't recall seeing one on an electroplate like this. |

The fact that the lines do not extend to the left edge means this stamp was in the left column of the 10x10 precancel impression - it is more likely the nailing would be done near the edge rather than the middle. |

Thanks for all of the info. Never heard of the nail hole story before, but after hearing it, it does make sense. Would these examples be considered more of the same? |

Another Framingham, MA Type 247 DLE oddity ... no top double line. Although the remnants of one may be there if you look very close. |
