Hopefully someone can tell me why there is a received postmark on this stamp and then a CDS strike over it. Was that normal. Nigel this is the stamp side of that Egremont church and graveyard. Any help is appreciated - Jeff
I am not certain, but the straight-line cancellation appears to be a portion of a "RECEIVED" marking. Covers and cards with markings that served as receivers are not uncommon but some are, more than others.
On most covers and cards I have from the UK, if there is a receiver marking of any kind, it would be a postmark from the point of origin but another CDS cancellation of the receiving city / town with another CDS from that as well.
What is interesting is the 'RECEIVED' is only partially applied. It is almost like there was another postcard or piece of paper laying on top of this one that masked off the 'RE' from being applied to this card? Maybe an early example of multi-tasking? This could explain the partial strike.
A nice postcard, I take it you have shown the front on another thread? Could you post the link so I can have a gander at the front?
