Hi, Completely new to stamps - In a collection of old papers I found this enevelope with what appears to be a note signed by Byrd. The stamp is 3 cent Antartic Expedition II with a cancel stamp from the S S Jacob Ruppert, May 9, 1935. Any thoughts as to whether this could be real?

Stamps are a visual thing. In order to come to a conclusion on it a good scan of the piece would help tremendously. I'm assuming it's one of these ?

Yep, nice scan, nice stamp. You have an imperforate from a souvenir sheet called the National Stamp Exhibition Issue or Byrd Issue. It is from the bottom middle of a six stamp sheet. The Scott catalog number would be 735a and catalog value is about $1.65 (2005 catalog). Very very very very few stamps sell at catalog value. As a matter of fact most sell for 20%-50% for collectible stamps, many sell for much less, and some superbly centered stamps sell for more. Of course, you know being in the antique business - "It's only worth what someone will pay for it".

:>} I'm not in the antique business..... The OP might have something decent, I was just showing him an example of the stamp I'm sure he is referring to. Mine that I posted is one of the Farley follies but his might have a legitimate cancel from the S.S. Jacob Ruppert.
