This may be a silly question, but what were the beer & wine stamps actually affixed to? Were the beer ones stuck onto wooden barrels? And how about wine... on crates? Beer stamps seem to always have damage. But how do you soak one off of a barrel??

Yes, they were affixed over the Bung Hole.

Also correct, Though some were also affixed to bottles(Less common). Others were affixed to shipping paperwork.

My wife's grandmother had some liquer bottles that still had the red rectangular shaped tax stamps affixed over the tops. I had tried steaming one off, but it basically fell apart. After that I decided to leave them as they were. I'm not a drinker so the contents were of no concern to me, just the stamps!

A while ago I also came across a bottle of something-or-other in the house. I tried to take the modern-day revenue off the bottle, but no dice. Actually, now that I think of it, it is possible the bottle was opened before... I have to dig the two halves up...
