Hi to all
The great think about buying deceased estates is that you often get heaps of duplicates. In those duplicates is where you sometimes find varieties.
In this instance the Christmas 1965 shows a variety.
If you look closely in the large single scan you can a definite colour shift in the numeral five. Also the hand of the Christ Child is deformed. And there are white spaces on the clothes of the Madonna. Also on some examples, the bodice of the Madonna's dress is striated, others it is a solid block of gold. Also all over the stamp with the variety is lighter. Perhaps this is one that shows a progression to the major error listed in Gibbons of Missing Colours.
Any opinions appreciated.
Usual comment I have examined it under a Gemmological Microscope
10X x 4, not skinning. and the shift is there and the colour is patchy and missing in parts. Also under a 10X lens you can see the re-entry of the 5d
Regards
Horamakhet

The stamp is photlitho IIRC, so cannot be a re entry,
that only happens on engraved stamps.
What you have is the sepia printed before the gold
so the 5d will always look blurred , fuzzy or whatever
when seen under magnification.
It doesn't look to be mis registered to me.
I don't think you can get a "progression" to a missing colour,
it is either missing or there.
This is one of the commonest stamps in the australian catalogue
to be chemically interferred with.
Lot's of gullible people have been scammed with this fellow.

I remember, myself, in my younger and more irresponsible days, taking to this stamp with the household meths bottle, and producing all sorts of interesting effects.

Hi Rod222 and Tonymacq

I appreciate your comments. I learn something new all the time.

The stamp shows no signs under UV of being chemically tampered with. The colour is missing where the white patches are. You can see definite striations on the bodice of the gown of the Madonna, but on others the striations are missing. You can see that on the 1st and and third the striations are there, but on the last the bodice is a solid block of gold.
However I am puzzled as to why the white patches, (perhaps dirt when printed) and why the hand of the Child is deformed.
regards,
Horamakhet

I was piqued by the title and wondering why Australia made stamps to commemorate estates that had somehow deceased.

A reminder that there are differences in usage.

Personally speaking,
I view any stamp with suspicion that has completed stamp duty.
You just don't know what it has come in contact with in it's
journey accompanying a cover.
Colour variations are really only confirmable with a mint unused
example.

Even my mint examples of this issue vary widely due to one
which I think has been in an environment which has dulled the gold.

When a stamp passes through a 4 colour process
if the plates are not lined up exactly true to the original design
then you may imagine what a matrix of results one can get
with 4 colours going wonky.

Take for example the childs hand, it is just a blob of pink.
It becomes a hand when the red plate takes its turn to define the fingers
If the red plate, or the pink plate are off by just a smidgeon
then things like tiny fingers are goin to look a little odd.

Photolitho on stamps is an inexact process as shown especially
on aussie stamps 1970 through 1980's there are some howlers,
example: the double fairlie steam engine,
what a disgusting stamp effort that was.

At best your discoveries are only EFO's, unless confirmed
by the australian varieties compendium, or the mistake
is remarkable, then the CV will remain low, unfortunately.

However don't allow my opinion, or my comments in any way
stop you from fly specking, esp if you enjoy it.
