I have a similar one on a 1 cent variety:

One of the better looking early precancels, however, I am given to understand that it carries little premium value as they were quite common in that day.

Still, a very nice example.

wt1, I bid on one of the 1 cent green with the Jackson Michigan precancel. I quit bidding when the bids topped 30 dollars. Glad that I did.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to check into that. I didn't know there was any demand for this precancel and just put it away with a number of others from that period. Didn't know that cancel commanded such a premium. I always learn something new on SCF!

Pricing from the newly relased PSS Classics Catalog. These are reliable retail quotes. Dashes indicate the item is listed in older catalogs but no copies have been reported in recent years.

Thanks for the catalog listing of this precancel. It's what I figured (list price of $2 for the 1 cent 1898 issue). I have no idea why someone would pay $30 on e-bay for such an item as previously suggested, as I understand they are not all that uncommon. (But I guess on some auction sites people can get carried away on price.)
