jh, I've never seen stamps from Macao and these are very interesting. On the red stamp in particular I see some faint horizontal dark lettering near the center. Is that a faint cancel or is there something stamped on the reverse?

It's the description from the stamp book, the stamps are pretty thin. There is nothing on the front or back of the stamps.

Jh, I checked the image of these stamps in the Scott catalogue and I don't see on them what I see on your 2A. When I zoom in on the 2A, I can see the first letter - a "C" on the left monk/priest. Some other letters I can see are R and A on the standing figure.

jh, thanks for showing the backs of the stamps and there is no evidence of the letters I commented upon. If the letters are not on the face of the stamps themselves perhaps something was picked up from your scanner or am I just imagining it.

My guess is that you were seeing the writing in the stamp book describing the stamp that was on the page I scanned from. :)

jh, I think you are right about lettering being picked up from the album page. The mystery is solved.
