This stamp appears like the old Confeederate States forgeries. Poor quality and in addition I see no values attached. Any help here with authenticity or Scott number or finally retiring?
It is definitely a forgery. Most of the time, you see the forgeries with the value overprints. But it is a definite forgery, nonetheless. As Jamesw noted, the double line is the distinguishing factor.
This stamp has a rather interesting history.
The original plates for this stamp were actually intended for printing bogus Persian stamps with a denomination of 3 chahi. They were not authorized by the government. The plates were discovered in Europe and confiscated before the bogus stamps printed. Later, the plates were turned over to Persia.
A few years later, due to dwindling stamp stockpiles because of WWI, the bogus plate was retrieved, the denomination/inscriptions removed, and used to print LEGITIMATE stamps for which the denomination/inscription were applied as an overprint.
Later on, a forgery was made of this stamp. In the forgery, there is a double line over POSTES. Of course, the overprint was also forged.
This is one of the few recorded cases for which a bogus plate was used to print real stamps, and then forged afterwards! Sort of a bogus/real/forged transition.
That's probably more than anybody wanted to know...
