OK sometimes I pretend I can see things. These two appear to be different shades of brown. Is it because one is just washed out because I don't find any shade differences for postage due in this section. Thanks as always - Jeff
Scott Specialized lists a number of varieties for these stamps. The "brown" issue of 1879 is also known to come in "pale brown", "deep brown" and "yellowish brown" varieties; the 1884 issue in "red brown" and "deep red brown"; and the 1891 issue in "bright claret" and "dark claret". The slight color variances along with the natural aging of these older stamps can often be quite difficult to discern.
