When I purchased the PR3 newspaper stamp, a couple of other items came with it. This was one. It was marked as a PR17TC3 24c 1875 Newspaper Trial Color Proof. I am guessing a PR17 Trial Color or Copy #3 but would someone please clue me in as to what this is, because the PR17 is said to be ROSE. Thanks as always - Jeff

Let me preface my remarks by saying that I have absolutely no experience with Trial Color Proofs, so this is simply taken out of my read of the Scott Specialized Catalog:

Under the section "Trial Color Proofs" the PR17TC (TC for Trial Color) is listed with three varieties and same catalog number -- Sepia, Green and Black. There are also two values listed, namely (1) Die on India [paper]; and (3) Plate on India [paper]. I assume the PR17TC3 relates to the latter.

My 2002 Specialized suggests catalog value at that time for the latter variety was $35.

Someone else may be able to chime in with more accurate information and/or up-to-date catalog values.

They were still listed at $35 in the 2011 catalog.
