Stamp collectors, by nature, are a curious lot. As a general rule, we want to become more knowledgeable about and want to identify the details of our stamps. We have many varieties in ink, paper, impressions etc. because they have been identified. In order to do this we use our reference guides, be it on paper or on the WEB. What reference material do we use to identify our stamps vary with what we collect. I suspect U.S. Federal and State Revenues have more variety than any other U.S. category than I can think of. This topic is to identify our reference material used to identify our stamps, regular postage or revenue, with the intention that perhaps others on this forum may want similar material. I have the following;
Private Die Proprietary Medicine Stamps, Confederate And Southern States Currency, United States Internal Revenue Tax-Paid Stamps Printed On Tin-Foil And Paper Tobacco Wrappers, 1929 The Historical Air Mail Catalog & Historical Covers, A Census of United States Match and Medicine Stamps, Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of The 1940's, Nutmeg Mail Auction 100 & Reference Guide, Linn's Introduction To United States Revenue Stamps, 1906 Scott's Standard Postage Stamp Catalog, 1937, 1984, 2001 & 2011 Scott's Specialized, Catalog of Various U.S.A. Tax Paid Revenues, B.N.A. Fantasies, Match & Medicine Facsimiles etc., 2nd, 5th - 10th Sherwood Springer Handbooks, Combs 1st, 2nd & 3rd Federal Issues State Revenue Society Catalog, UDPOD 1936, 1949 & 1968 Description Of United States Postage Stamp, and app. 70 WEB sites bookmarked.
Is there a better way to share this information on this forum?

My main reference for quick checking is the South African Colour Catalogue (2010). The SACC is never far from me
Others :
Scott US Specialized Unitrade SG Great Britain Concise SG Southern Africa Africa SG Channel Isles and Isle of Man Hibernian Ireland Postmarks of Natal
I am looking for the Union Handbook - out of print and always seems to slip my grasp.
I am also an internet addict - far too many websites to list here. |

Apart from my reference books, which were listed in a "Word" file, I have the following catalogues:

There are any more I could list here but it would take too long.I have always been a believer that a collector should be informed with reference books & catalogues.
If anyone needs information about anything, I am more than glad to share this information, if I have it.

Through the power of the internet much of my library is digital. I have numerous stamp collecting periodicals from 1890-1920 (Meekel's, American Philatelist, etc). My main resource is 7000 pages of research notes that I have compiled and 72,000 images related to early U.S. stamps and postal operations. |

I lied about my age to get the student rate. I tried to change it several time and finally said the heck with it. |

I just added a few more book. I got the "American Stampless Cover Catalog" V1, V2 & V3. V1 & V2 are the 4th edition while V3 is the 3rd. Lots of reading to do and already using them. I also got a book by Dr. Carroll Chase, 1962, "Classic United States". Only 45 pages but looks like a good read and reference. |
