When engravers are first creating a stamp, they engrave a plate. When they believe it is ready to be used they create the plate to print the stamps, they use the original to create a few samples. They may use different ink colors to find out what works best and they use card stock paper. Depending on the type of proof / Paper they can be very expensive or very reasonable as I purchased these for a few bucks each. Personally I love the detail in the proofs.
Southpaw posted some beautiful match & medicine proofs and essays in another thread. It inspired me to look for someplace to upload an image of my favorite proof, and I found this old thread. I love the R99 proof because it looks great and because the catalogue value of the stamp itself is $2,500, which has been beyond my budget. I was able to get the proof for $80, and it makes a nice place holder in my revenue collection.
OK technically these are Back-Of-Book material but obviously not revenue stamps but I feel I must contribute anyway as it's been awhile since I've posted anything.
