Hello All,
Hopefully someone here can read Japanese. I have questions about the postmarks and addresses on these Japanese postal cards. With the exception of #3, what is the origina and destination of these postal cards? Also what are the dates on the 19th Century postal cards? #8 doesn't have a postmark, but the others from that time period have Japanese numerals. The first two are from the late 1950's-early 1960's and have 35 and 33 calender years. The third postcard I can cheat...it's on the back.
Thanks, Will

The second one down, looks like a Lottery postcard.

I'll see what I can do, but old Japanese handwriting is the devil.

#1 Chuo (Central) Osaka to Kobe
#2 Looks like Kyoto Kita (North) to Kobe; and it is a New Year Lottery card, for 1958
#3 Machida City (in Tokyo Prefecture) to Tokyo; red handstamp 'Urgent'
#4 The postmarks are inverted, and my neck got too sore before I could deal with the date, but it looks Like Musashi to Kanda (Tokyo)
#5 Same pair; I'd need close-up scans of the dates to make them out properly
#6 From Musashi to an illegible destination; handwriting is a bit too elegantly cursive
#7 Appears to be Tokyo to Tokyo; no date
#8 Appears to be a very local usage - it only gives the suburb name, and without the city, it would be searching for a needle in a large and historical haystack. No date

If you can give detailed scans of the old CDSs, I may be able to extract the dates from them.

Tony - Thanks for the translation help! After my previous work on old German handwriting I can understand how crazy it can be trying to understand it and probably more so with Japanese. I'll have to see about detailed scans of the postmarks, but my 12 year old scanner...well it will be like Scotty from Star Trek..."any more Captain and she'll blow". I need a new one badly.

They are absolutely gorgeous to look at, even without understanding them!

Stampgal, for your edification, the brushwork on #6 and #7 is particularly nice ... and also particularly illegible
