Hi all - I am new to this forum, but not totally new to the hobby. Started collecting at age 11 when my mother gave me her stamp album that she started with when she was about the same age. I now collect worldwide, Israel MNH Tab Singles, but also have accumulations of some other things like FDCs and Cinderellas.

I am in a "transition" right now as I recently decided to collect worldwide and just print off album pages as I need them. I have also dabbled in topicals like Music, Maps and Judaica. I'm looking forward to learning more about the hobby. Thanks!

Just a quick question to the long-timers here. What is the best way to put up photos of stamps on this forum? I have both a scanner and a hand-held digital camera. Any tips or tricks people can suggest?

Yirmeyahu

Above the recent forum topics on the left hand side of your screen, you will see 'Tutorials' .
Follow the link for Uploading photos.

You can aslo use a host, like Photobucket, to upload your pics.
use your scanner, practice and have fun.

Hi Yirmeyaho, welcome. Glad you are here.

There are also a couple of member written tutorials about posting scans or photos. Just click on the Search button and look for scans or photos.

Stamps mostly come out better with a scanner for most folks. There re a few who have the skills to take great photos of stamps and I wish I was one of them.

You usually only need 75 ppi to 300 ppi resolution for am average stamp scan for internet display. A good one is at 600 ppi. Really examining the engraved stamps almost needs 1200 ppi.

To keep within board guide lines the scan needs to be 100kb in file size I think which is hard to do just scanning and posting so you also need to use the online photo resizing tool or do it yourself with your own photo editing software.

Stamps look best online on a dark or black background which means on a Vario stock page or similar or using a piece of black paper attached to your scanner top or just putting one over the stamps (carefully) when scanning.

Also I like to make long posts.

Still working on getting some material together for some photo uploads.

I just received my first Scott Catalog in the mail yesterday. Woo hoo! Now I can start organizing my stamps chronologically and printing out album pages.

Have been a bit distracted by family, holiday cleaning and celebrating, etc., but plan to get back to my stamps soon!
