I have a registered cover from Jan 3, 1895 with 8 1 cent columbians. When you look at the back, its apparent that there was at least 1 stamp cut from the back. Any idea on what it might have been?

The regestry rate was 10 cents, probably 2 more 230's

I would have guessed a wrong colored skelling, but then most of the time my guesses are wrong!

The registry rate was 10c but the domestic letter rate was 2c so the cover is missing 4c of postage.

I have something similar in the way of a registered Colombian cover except on mine there are 2 X 234's and 4 X 232's a total of 22 cents this was the going rate for overseas registered mail.



So as you can see there would have been a few more stamps on that letter.

so considering the postage rate was it common to find these in pairs?

That's interesting because, I usually find the lower denominations [1˘-6˘] in pairs. That's why I inquired about them and now seeing both of those examples it started making sense.
