Can anyone help ID this? I thought it was type 43, but it does not meet the criteria.

this is a postcancel, not precancel

I thought that cancel looked familiar. Here's a couple of examples I have that were mistaken for precancels at first:

More specifically, a box cancel?

Yes. In my examples (which are off-center), the vertical line is a dead giveaway; your example was a little harder to discern because the vertical lines do not appear on the stamp.
