Hi, I'm Jezabel from Western Australia.
Can someone please help identify if a "stamp" I purchased is real or a fake???
It is supposed to be a 1857 George Washington voilet/black on thick proof paper imperf.
Is there such a stamp?? I have tried to download the image to here, but its keeps telling me I can't have a file with no name?? Don't understand how this works.
I'm fairly new to collecting, but to me it looks like a photocopy on a piece of cardboard.
Any info would be greatly appreciated if someone has an image of this stamp if it does exist.
Cheers
Jez

if you have the image saved to your PC you can upload to Photo Bucket (free account if you dont have one already) then go to the FAQ section and it tells you how to insert the image.. I am sure many folks will be happy to help out but they will need the best possible image to lok at in order to assist..

Hi Jezabel and welcome to the forum

I cannot state positively for US stamps but I know that Canadian stamps are known on 'proof' card paper. This was usually a 'hard' stock form of paper. As far as I know, the US also had the same policy for their stamps back in that era (?)

were the proofs not usually a different color or was that specimens? If it is a 24c washington proof it may be a winner and not at all a dissapointment. However with the countless forgeries and fakes we'll wait for pics and the US gurus to chime in.

If you are uploading, then make sure your file size is under 90K, and that the file name is a group of continuous numbers and letters. Spaces and marks are kicked back.

Please don't take my comments to be 100% accurate, as I have really have no knowledge of these proofs, but I do have a Scott US Specialized Catalog and under the section "Die and Plate Proofs" for the 24c denomination there is only one type that is said to be in "blackish violet" color and that is Scott #45P (Reprints of 1857-60 Issue). Under this listing there is said to be a "plate card". That could very possibly be what you have described, but I'm just not certain.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with more detailed information.
