I have a few stamps in my collection that say Molly Pitcher stamped on them. Anyone know why or that just knows more about this? Thanks!
I am aware of who Molly Pitcher is/was but curious to know if this maybe was an attempt at a commem or what?
oh yeah they're on Scott#646 I believe.

The "MOLLY PITCHER" overprint on the 2c Washington was issued on Oct 20, 1928. The stamp was overprinted in her honor and also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Monmounth.
There are 2 varieties of the overprint that are distinguish by the spacing between the overprint lines: 18mm (normal) or 28mm.
Yeah, they took the quick and easy route and converted a pre-existing definite to a commemorative. Other countries have done this as well. |

Can anyone show a comparison of the different line spacing mentioned earlier?

The overprints of the Battle of Monmouth,Hawaii and Kansas/Nebraska issues were applied on the rotary press during the printing of the stamps (as with the Bureau precancels). The surface print device was attached near the gumming rollers prior to the drying box. The device was spaced at 18mm for the stamp to stamp with a 28mm spcing for the 10mm gutter between the upper and lower panes and the 10mm plate to plate spacing. The overprint could drift placing the 28mm on the stamps. This spacing is produced the "Pitcher Only" variety on this stamp. Here is the 28mm spacing on the 658a Kansas |

Lots of fakes and forgeries with these and of course the Kans. & Nev. overprints. I hear the USPS done the overprints (Kans. & Neb.) to curtail an ongoing stamp theft and resale racket back in the day but not all post offices were aware of these overprints and wouldn't accept them as valid postage so the story goes. |
