Dianne,
In my opinion, that is exactly the answer everyone should have. Mount your stamps the way you want, the way that you think looks the best to you. As has been said many times before, do it your way.

Rap Brown ? Oh never mind...its hard for me to believe how vehment some people were in their opinions...would it have been the same if we all were sitting at the same table ? There is no perfect answer..if I use plastic stock pages the stamps flip around when I take the album down from the shelf...if I use mounts on a $1.80 set that really increases costs...same if I use a mount for a minimum value used stamp..on a 50 dollar set mint or used..i think I would use mounts !! |

This just goes to show that some have strong opinions one way or another. My initial question was just to get an idea of how others mount their stamps. I NEVER expected this kind of response. I also never thought about hinging my mounts! That is something that I could have used on several occasions where I wanted to replace a mount and ended up taking up part of the page with the mount. Where do you north American users of mounts typically get your mounts? Looking for a reasonable deal on them, as I have over 4000 US and Canadian stamps that I want to mount to my custom printed album pages. I will still probably put the entire page in the page protectors like my ww collection pages are. Which suggests a top opening mount is the ticket, as they are easier to put the stamp in. I'm not concerned with a particularly heavy weight mount either (again, as the entire page goes in a sleeve). Dave. |

I use Scott strip mounts and cut them to size. I get them from Amos Press (Parent company to Scott & Linn's). Belonging to the Amos Advantage "club" provides a nice discount. https://www.amosadvantage.com/scott...o=&category=Art |

Hey Tomiseksj, I noticed him yesterday (he's on ebay as well) and was going to ask if anyone knew about him. His prices seem pretty good all in all. d. |

Dave, You'd be hard-pressed to find a better price and, like I indicated above, I haven't noted any problems with quality in the dozens of strips I've used so far. If you buy the strips then you'll need a cutter. I bought this one a few months ago ( http://greendragonstuff.com/items/a...2-detail.htm ). My only complaint with it is that I have to position the mounts along the bottom edge of the cutter in order to get a clean cut. Steve |

Thanks Steve,
Great info, I'll probably get my hands one one of those. Like you say, the price seems to be unbeatable on those mounts.
Thanks,
Dave. |

Steve/Dave.. perhaps a stupid question. I'm moving to my first printed album pages from Vario sheets; can't I cut the mount strip with scissors? Why special cutters?
Also, what weight of pages would you folks recommend? 65lb card stock ok?

Hey Ram
You can cut them with scissors, but it's harder to cut them perpendicular to the edge, and for large mounts, you can't cut them in one pass, so you often end up with jagged edges.
The mount cutter makes it quick and simple to get nice square cuts. Some mount cutters also have a jig thing that makes it trivial to cut a number of them to the same size.
Of course, a ruler and an X-Acto knife works too.
